Drift events: cars,
setups & what sets it apart.

Drifting is a different discipline entirely — it's about angle, smoke, proximity, and style. Here's what you need to know.

Drifting vs. grip racing

GRIP RACING

  • Goal: minimum lap time
  • Steering: follow the intended line precisely
  • Tyres: maximum grip; tyre management critical
  • Setup: neutral or mild understeer
  • Success: sector times, lap times, positions

DRIFTING

  • Goal: maximum style and angle
  • Steering: sustained countersteering at full lock
  • Tyres: consumed deliberately; smoke is the metric
  • Setup: aggressive oversteer; locked diff
  • Success: angle, proximity (tandem), smoke, commitment

Popular drift cars

  • Nissan Silvia (S13/S14/S15) — the definitive drift platform. FR layout, light, SR20DET swaps everywhere. Parts availability is excellent.
  • Nissan 350Z / 370Z — heavier but more power from the factory. VQ engine responds well to modification.
  • Nissan Skyline R32/R33 — capable but heavier; the RB engine is revered.
  • BMW E36 / E46 — European favourite. FR, balanced, available cheap, M50/M54 engines tune well. Coilover options are excellent.
  • Toyota AE86 — the original. Lightweight and responsive but power-limited; 4AGE swaps common.
  • Toyota Supra (A70/A80) — serious power potential but heavier and expensive to build properly.
  • Mazda MX-5 (NA/NB) — beginner-friendly, cheap to run, great learning car at club level.
  • Ford Mustang — popular in US competition; power is not the problem, weight management is.
  • Chevrolet Corvette (C5/C6) — serious build, serious power, serious cost.

Typical drift setup

Differential

A locked or 2-way LSD is essential for competition drifting — open diffs kill momentum through the corner. Mechanical LSDs with aggressive ramp angles for near-lock behaviour. Welded diffs are common in entry-level builds.

Steering angle

Competition cars typically run 50–70° of steering lock. This requires aftermarket knuckles or modified steering arms. Without additional lock, the car limits initiation angle — acceptable at club level, a handicap at competition.

Suspension

Coilovers with stiff rear settings and relatively compliant front. The rear needs predictability under throttle; the front needs to respond to steering input quickly. Camber plates are common to dial in negative front camber for steering feel.

Handbrake

A hydraulic handbrake on a separate line from the rear circuit gives precise e-brake initiation. Standard handbrakes are cable-operated and too slow for competition use.

Power

Enough power to maintain angle once initiated. At club level, 200–350hp is workable. Pro competition typically runs 500–1,000hp+ with sequential gearboxes. High power amplifies everything — handling mistakes included.

What to expect at a drift event

Most drift events run two formats: practice sessions where you lap freely, and competition runs judged on angle, line, proximity to walls (or a chase car in tandem), and throttle commitment.

Scrutineering checks safety equipment and the car. You'll be assigned a run group. In competition, qualifying runs determine bracket seeding; elimination rounds are usually best-of-three. Judges score each run; highest combined score advances.

At club level, expect a social atmosphere — most drivers are happy to help with setup advice. The drifting community is notably open to beginners compared to circuit racing.
