Why karting?
Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Norris — every current F1 champion started in karting. It teaches racecraft, spatial awareness, throttle control, and racing line precision faster than any other discipline. You're sitting inches from the ground, feeling every input directly, with no suspension to mask your mistakes.
KZ shifter karts generate 2.5G of cornering force and weigh around 170 kg combined (driver included). Rotax Senior karts produce 1.5G+. These are numbers that rival professional race cars.

Chassis & setup fundamentals
Unlike cars, karts have no suspension, no differential, and a solid rear axle. All handling adjustments come through chassis flex and geometry changes. This makes setup feel alien to car drivers at first — but the logic is consistent once understood.
Tyre pressures
0.5 PSI difference transforms a kart's handling character. Adjust in 0.2 PSI increments once you're close to the target window. Higher pressure = stiffer feeling, less contact patch, more oversteer tendency. Lower pressure = more grip, more understeer. Baseline starting pressures vary by compound and ambient temperature.
Chassis tuning
Rear axle stiffness, seat strut position, front bar width, and ride height are the primary adjustment points. Stiffer rear = more willing to rotate; softer = more planted. Front width affects how aggressively the front lifts the inside rear wheel through corners — the key to kart cornering mechanics.
Jetting (2-stroke engines)
Rich mixture = more fuel, cooler, less power; lean = more power, more heat. Jetting to ambient temperature and altitude is critical. Too lean in a hot environment causes seizure. When in doubt, run slightly richer.
Weight & balance
CIK-FIA sets strict minimum weights. Lead ballast is positioned to fine-tune balance. More weight over the front increases front grip and stability; more toward the rear generates rotation. Most drivers run close to the minimum with ballast at the seat.

Safety equipment
- Full-face helmet — Snell CMS rated for recreational; FIA 8860-2018 for competition
- Race suit or, at minimum, long sleeves and trousers (synthetic materials prohibited)
- Rib protector — mandatory for competition; strongly recommended for all
- Gloves and karting boots (or closed shoes for rental)
- Neck brace or collar for competition
