Track timing systems
For organisers running an event with transponder timing. Live streams laps, running order and flags onto the board while the session runs. File imports a results export afterwards.
| System | Live | File | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MyLaps Orbits | ✓ | ✓ | Turn on RMonitor output: Tools ▸ Options ▸ Interfaces. |
| MyLaps Trackside / X2 | ✓ | ✓ | Turn on the RMonitor / results relay under Settings ▸ Outputs. |
| AxWare (autocross) | ✓ | ✓ | Monitor output under Setup ▸ Network. Cone penalties are applied. |
| Any RMonitor relay | ✓ | ✓ | Point the bridge at the relay's address and port. |
| Any results CSV | — | ✓ | Columns are recognised automatically; you confirm which driver is which. |
- Open Race Control for your event (Event page ▸ Live timing ▸ Open Race Control) and go to Timing.
- Connect timing walks you through it: turn on the output, download the small Outlap bridge to the timing PC, create a key, run one command.
- Check Transponders & numbers. Drivers who saved theirs in their garage are already filled in; add hire units on the day.
- No live link? Use Import timing in Race Control's lap entry to load the results file after each session.
Using something else — Alge, TAG Heuer, Westhold, Speedhive exports? Send us a sample file and we'll add it.
Drivers' data loggers
Import a session from your own logger. Outlap reads the GPS and times every lap itself — against the circuit's start/finish line when we know it — so a 10 Hz logger is accurate to a few thousandths. Pick an event you're entered in and the laps go onto its board.
| Logger | How to export |
|---|---|
| Racelogic VBOX | Copy the .vbo file from the SD card, or in Circuit Tools: File ▸ Export ▸ VBO. |
| AiM (Solo 2, MyChron, MXS…) | Race Studio 3 ▸ Analysis ▸ open the session ▸ Export ▸ CSV. Include GPS channels. |
| RaceChrono | Session ▸ ⋮ ▸ Export ▸ CSV (v3). |
| TrackAddict | Sessions ▸ select the session ▸ Export ▸ CSV data. |
| Garmin Catalyst | Garmin Connect ▸ the activity ▸ ⚙ ▸ Export to GPX. |
| Harry's LapTimer and others | Export as CSV or GPX. A plain list of lap times works too. |
AiM's own .xrk/.drk files are a closed format, so export to CSV from Race Studio. Garmin's .fit files: export GPX from Garmin Connect instead.
No timing kit at all
- Phone lap timer — mount your phone in the car: a position-matched live delta to your best lap, a predicted lap, real sector lines, and it can feed the event board live. Open the lap timer →
- Marshal phone — a marshal at the line taps each car through, a timing beam for the price of a phone. Learn more →
- Timekeeper entry — type or paste lap times in Race Control from a phone or laptop; the board updates for everyone. Everything for organisers →
Phone lap timer vs. a dedicated logger
A good comparison point is a VBOX LapTimer — the kind of dedicated GPS lap timer teams already bring to a track day. Here's how the free phone timer stacks up.
| VBOX LapTimer | Outlap, on your phone | |
|---|---|---|
| Lap timing | Line crossings | Line crossings, interpolated between GPS readings |
| Live delta | Compared by position on track | Compared by position on track |
| Predicted lap | Yes | Yes |
| Delta-V lights | 6 LEDs | 6 on-screen lights |
| Sectors / splits | Yes | Real sector lines, placed on your first lap; flash ± against your best sector |
| Ideal lap (best sectors combined) | In Circuit Tools, after the session | Live in the car, and on the session page |
| Finding the start/finish line | Database of 800+ circuits | Detects the circuit by GPS; at a new track it places the line itself and confirms it next time round — the first lap still counts |
| Track database | Fixed | Fills itself — a clean session at a circuit with no line saves it for every driver after |
| Post-session analysis | Circuit Tools | Session page: track map coloured by speed, two laps overlaid, a gap-to-best graph |
| Export | .vbo | .vbo (opens in Circuit Tools, start/finish line included), GPX, CSV |
| Beyond a logger | — | Live event timing board, spoken pit and tyre-wear alerts, Camber AI engineer, tyre and brake modelling, compare rooms |
Phone GPS updates roughly once a second in a browser — lap and sector times stay accurate between readings, but the live delta display updates at that same rate.
One honest caveat: if the first clean session at a circuit used the auto-placed line, that's the line every later driver gets. Lap times are still correct, but sectors may not land exactly on the track's official start/finish.
